There are many doubts regarding these alternatives, “Hosting or VPS”, so here we present a summary of: differences, similarities, advantages and disadvantages.

The hosting is a shared space, a portion of the resource that basically serves to host a Web page. When it is shared among several other sites, the following may occur: one or more of the sites on the server consume more important resources than others, either due to the traffic itself or due to processes in memory and / or processor, therefore one of the sites affected by the excessive use of another resource could be our site, and this is evidenced when: access to our page becomes slow, there are times of disconnection, or our site is out of line, among other common symptoms. When this happens, we will not have many options for our site to re-establish itself: we must be aware of the release of resources consumed by third parties, or we can only wait.

In VPS (for its acronym in English Virtual Private Server) also serves to host a website, but here we reserve resources for our consumption exclusively, being these: RAM, processor cores, space, data transfer, and others; and we can freely and carefully dispose of those exclusive resources.

The VPS in simple explanations works as follows: it is certainly a single server but it is partitioning into several virtual servers, using special programs, and this partition can even have its own operating system (OS), this technique is commonly known as virtualization.

The advantage in the VPS is that, as we mentioned above, we have our own resources and also, we have a way to measure the consumption of resources and we can have real statistics on them to detect bottlenecks in processes, excessive consumption of various resources among other important things when it comes to tracking sites that can not be out of line or that their access speed cannot be slow. In each case, detected a problem, we will have several options for timely correction of the disadvantages: from resetting the server, kill processes, detect point of excessive consumption, to expand resources almost in real time, although the latter depends on almost all the cases of the provider’s support.

VPS is a good alternative to host sites in ScriptCase

The VPS is one of the best alternatives for when our site demands it because of contracting improvements in hosting, it goes without saying that in a VPS you can add several domains, but this depends on the plan you have with the provider. In our tests with sites developed in ScriptCase and medium traffic, they demanded minimum of 2G of RAM and enough with a processor core to 2Ghz of virtualization so that the site is without any clogging in its use.

A disadvantage of the VPS, at least if we can call it that, is that whoever uses it as webmaster of the site must have advanced knowledge of the Linux OS for its complete, better and optimal use, although it is common nowadays that it comes pre-installed with a panel of Web control, but its maximization of use will be given using the Linux console. Nowadays one of its true main disadvantages continues to be the rising cost, although at a slow pace it tends to be increasingly accessible to all.
